Democracy and dictatorship in Italy, 1896–1943

AS Unit F962

Striking metal workers — Italy faced many economic problems following the First World War

OCR’s period studies module on Italy covers the period 1896–1943. It examines the political and economic effects of the First World War on Italy, political instability and divisions after the war, the rise of fascism and Mussolini’s time in power, ending in 1943.

The paper will offer you three questions and you must answer two. The exam is 1½ hours long and so you have 45 minutes to answer each question. The essay must be focused, use detailed and accurate evidence and make an evaluative judgement on the issue in the question. You have to be careful to avoid ‘listing’ factors. An important skill here is to be able to explain exactly what makes one factor more important than the next. As well as explaining factors you have to offer a supported judgement.
