This module examines the rise of the USA to become a world superpower after the Second World War. From a stable economic and political base put in place before the First World War, the USA was able to boom during the 1920s. Although this module studies a 55-year period of overall growth, it was not an era of complete prosperity. The Wall Street Crash led to the Great Depression of the 1930s, and the Ku Klux Klan, Prohibition and immigration put strains on US society.

The examination has three questions and you must answer two of them. All of the questions have two parts. The first part, worth 12 marks, will focus on an event, issue or development. The exam board wants you to show that you can explain the causes and reasons behind it. The second part, worth 24 marks, will be broader and include more factors. Here, the exam board wants you to demonstrate that you understand the bigger issues, and can look at both sides and make a judgement about a historical debate.
