OCR’s period studies module on Russia from 1894 to 1941 covers a turbulent time in Russia’s history, from the coronation of Nicholas II to the ‘Great Patriotic War’ and the fight against Hitler. It includes Bloody Sunday, the 1905 and 1917 revolutions and the governments of Lenin and Stalin.

The paper will offer you three questions and you must answer two of these. The exam is 1½ hours long and so you have 45 minutes to answer each question. The essay must be focused, use detailed and accurate evidence and make an evaluative judgement on the issue in the question. You have to be careful to avoid ‘listing’ factors. An important skill here is to be able to explain exactly what makes one factor more important than another. As well as explaining factors, you have to offer a supported judgement.
