From the creation of the welfare state after the Second World War to Tony Blair’s decade in Downing Street, this period of British history is one of Conservative dominance with key Labour governments at either end. Attlee, Churchill, Wilson, Thatcher and Blair each sought to make the most of their time as prime minister, dealing with Britain’s changing role in the world and responding to the Suez Crisis, the oil crisis, the miners’ strike and the Falklands War.

The examination has three essay questions and you must answer two of them. It gives you an opportunity to demonstrate that you can communicate the knowledge and understanding that you have learned in this unit, as well as the historical skills you have accumulated over your entire A-level course.
