The question discussed here is in the style of the OCR (A) AS paper ‘Dictatorship and democracy in Germany, 1933–63’. It tests understanding of the key issue of East Germany, part of which concerns to what extent and in what ways communism transformed the GDR (German Democratic Republic) — in German, the DDR. Candidates are expected to compare two of the sources as evidence for a specific element. They also have to use their own knowledge and their skills in evaluating sources to reach a conclusion about an issue in the question.
