Professor Richard J. Evans has not one, but three jobs. He is regius professor of history, University of Cambridge; president of Wolfson College, Cambridge; and Gresham professor of rhetoric, Gresham College, London. He specialises in the modern history of Europe with a particular focus on German history.
Professor Evans is probably best known for his intervention as an expert witness in a court case started by David Irving, the infamous Holocaust denier. Evans later wrote about the experience in his book Telling Lies About Hitler: the Holocaust, History and the David Irving Trial. His latest book, Cosmopolitan Islanders: British Historians and the European Continent, considers why the insular British have produced so many historians who, like himself, focus on Europe.
