The OCR Historical Themes paper emphasises the need for students to develop a broad overview of the period studied. The paper is clearly designed to stretch and challenge candidates and is excellent preparation for those who wish to study history at a higher level.
When answering questions in the examination, students need to avoid producing a chronological, narrative-based answer. They need, therefore, to focus on the ‘command stem’ (e.g. ‘to what extent…’, ‘how far…’) and the key terms in the essay question. If both are considered carefully, the candidate is far more likely to provide a balanced, analytical and well-structured response.
