This module, ‘From tsardom to Bolshevism’, examines a tumultuous period of Russian history, considering how Russia changed and the reasons for it.

When Alexander II became tsar in 1855 he was the autocratic ruler of a massive nation. The next 60 years, however, saw a gradual erosion of tsarist power until Alexander’s grandson, Nicholas II, was deposed in 1917. This module considers the key personalities of Witte, Stolypin, Kerensky and Lenin alongside the influences of serfdom, industrialisation and war.
