AQA: Exam focus

The state and people, Britain 1918–64

Unit HIS3J

Peter Newark’s Pictures

The 50 or so years covered by this unit, ‘The state and people: Britain 1918–64’, saw Britain ride a rollercoaster of peace and war, depression and prosperity, conflict and consensus. Some of Britain’s greatest political voices could be heard in the House of Commons, including the Welsh lilt of David Lloyd George, the Scottish brogue of Ramsay MacDonald and the unmistakable drawl of Winston Churchill. Together they drove key developments that altered fundamentally the relationship between the British state and its citizens.

The examination for this unit contains three essay questions and you must answer two of them. The examiner will make sure that at least one of the questions is synoptic and covers the whole period, while at least one question will focus on a short, key period. This exam gives you an opportunity to demonstrate that you can communicate the knowledge and understanding that you have learned in this unit, as well as the historical skills you have accumulated over your entire A-level course.
