Chocolate is a very complex thing. We know about the feel-good factor it stimulates, the sensuousness and eroticism it can generate as a mild aphrodisiac, the complex science at work in providing this elevated mood, and the potential health benefits in terms of blood pressure and cholesterol reduction.

Let’s have a look at how the association with sex started, how it grew and how it persists to this day – aided and abetted by extensive scientific research and exotic and semi-erotic advertising. It was probably the Mayans who cultivated, manufactured and consumed chocolate on a large scale from around AD 600, in a bitter liquid form they called xocolatl.
