Notes are essential to have at your fingertips when preparing for examinations. They provide the core source of information needed to construct well-supported answers. However, often students neglect this study skills area, relying too heavily on knowledge gleaned from revision note guides produced by awarding body-endorsed publishers. This article considers why making personalised notes is crucial for examination success and the optimum way to produce such notes.

Notes are usually written records of information obtained from other written, oral and visual sources. Such sources are likely to include books, monographs, articles (including blogs), newspapers, various official and non-official documents, films, recordings (including podcasts) and observed objects and events.
