As Wikipedia celebrates its twentieth birthday, this column explores its value as a historical source

Wikipedia founder Jimmy Wales

In the 1990s, when the world wide web was forming, one comment described it as the world’s largest library, but one in which the books were all piled randomly on the floor. Since those days, massive advances have been made in creating order in available resources through, not least, the unimaginably powerful search engines that are now universal.

Many libraries and archives, as this column highlights in every issue, have made their resources available, often without a paywall for publicly and privately-owned resources. Even so, the vision which the founder of Wikipedia, Jimmy Wales, had in those days seemed utopian in the extreme.
