‘GOTCHA’: The Sun and the sinking of the Belgrano

The Sun’s headlines during the Falklands War were notorious. Their articles shocked the British public, but did they influence them at the ballot boxes?

In 1982, Britain went to war with Argentina after its military junta (joint dictatorship), led by General Galtieri, sent its forces to invade the British overseas territory of the Falkland Islands in Argentina.

As the British press reported on the Falklands War, one particular headline stood out. It was from tabloid newspaper The Sun, and it appeared after the Argentinian cruiser, the General Belgrano, was sunk by the British submarine, HMS Conqueror. The paper’s frontpage on 4 May 1982 was dominated by one word: ‘GOTCHA’.
