The Little Red Book

Before the death of Mao Zedong, the number of copies of the Little Red Book in print had reached over 5 billion: almost every Chinese person had one. How and why did it become so important?

Quotations from Chairman Mao Tse-tung is known as the Little Red Book (LRB) in the Western world but in China as the hongbaoshu, or Red Treasure Book. It is the most widely circulated book in Chinese history and has been translated into 20 languages.

The rise of the LRB was driven by the political struggles which spread from the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) to the population at large from 1965 to 1976. The first edition of the LRB, containing 200 quotes, was compiled and published in 1965 by the People’s Liberation Army (PLA) Press controlled by Marshal Lin Biao. As soon as the first edition sold out, the PLA published an enlarged edition containing 427 quotes from 1926 to 1965, and this is the version we read now. This second edition again immediately sold out.
