In 2012, the Warwick Network for Parish Research established an online platform with research and learning resources for local history, heritage, art and culture. ‘My-Parish’ (www.tinyurl.com/y48njazj) now features a wide range of materials relating to the British Isles and continental countries from the Middle Ages to the present. This article highlights a new nationwide database of parish accounts alongside items of interest for students of the English and European Reformations.
Ever since the fourteenth century, churchwardens have played a key role in parish life. Their (usually annual) accounts provide insights not only into building and embellishment work for places of worship but also into religious change (for example the ‘stripping of altars’ during the Edwardian Reformation), local government matters (such as highway maintenance or poor relief) and convivial events (like the holding of events to sell church ales).
