Questions to ask at university history open days

Think open days are a waste of your time? Think again

In the digital era, it’s easy to find out about many aspects of the student experience at any UK university and department, and you may be tempted to conserve time and money by skipping open days. But, speaking as a university lecturer who has for years been involved with recruitment and admissions in both history and American studies, I urge you to attend an open day at each of the universities to which you are giving serious consideration. Websites, videos and social media can all be helpful as you make your decision, but I have heard from many students that it was their experience at open days which was the most useful in helping them make a well-informed decision about where to study. University represents a large investment of time, money and effort, so it’s best to take every opportunity to learn about different institutions and pick the one in which you will flourish personally and academically.

At an open day, you may feel that you’ve been bombarded with information, and struggle to take all of it in, and you may also feel shy asking questions in front of a room full of strangers. But since academic staff and current students attend their department’s open days, it’s a great idea to speak to them about how things work. Here are some ideas about questions you might want to ask.
