What’s your first criterion when selecting where to study history at university? You might consider location, whether it’s campus or city based, accommodation, facilities such as sports and societies. But quality of academic provision is crucial.
Using university league tables and prospectuses shows you the grade requirements of each degree programme and provides data on the quality of those degree programmes. The statistics can be overwhelming and most history departments claim to be staffed by expert researchers, who are passionate about imparting that knowledge to students. However, universities with the best reputation and highest entry requirements — often members of the Russell Group — prioritise their research activities, and their elite professors may teach few classes. Instead you will be taught by their PhD students. This may benefit you, as the new teachers will bring innovative ideas to the classroom, but do not dismiss teaching-focused universities where senior staff tend to spend more time teaching.
