Research skills

Become an independent learner by exploring our guide to effective research skills

A key objective of many A-level courses is to assist students in becoming independent learners. Developing effective research skills is a vital component of this objective and constitutes an important part of historical study. As your skill set develops, so too will your ability to construct high-quality assignments and your confidence at embarking on independent learning. This article will discuss three important aspects of the research process: constructing a research question, locating relevant sources, and note-taking methods. Some of these you will meet at A-level, and some give you a glimpse of university-level research.

Devising your own research question provides you with an excellent opportunity to tailor your learning to meet your own interests. An assignment should always seek to resolve a problem, deepen understanding and even alter perception. It should seek to convey the intended outcome of your project, while also providing a sense of direction and purpose to your discussion.
