Synthesis in the study of history is a process that involves piecing together strands of information that form the ‘whole picture’ of a long period of time. The strands are often thematic in nature (for example economic and social themes) and a long period of time is considered to be at least a century.
Essays requiring synthesis should be approached thematically rather than chronologically, particularly if you want to reach the higher mark range. In answering such essay questions, you are required to make connections, comparisons and links between different elements of the period and aspects of the topic.
