In 1999, Tim Berners-Lee declared that the ‘concept of the web’ was one of ‘universal readership’. For historians, this is a statement that appears more of a reality now than ever before. Special collections, libraries and universities worldwide are making their resources available online and there are many digital collections within specialised research interests. With commercial companies also digitising texts, millions of historic and contemporary texts are now available online.
Yet this resource is not without drawbacks.
