Advertising has been important to newspapers for at least 200 years. Adverts were so prominent that they often appeared on the front page, with news being relegated to inside pages. Whereas today’s newspapers are full of advertisements for the latest cars, electronics, perfumes and other consumables, in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, newspaper adverts were far more practical and personal.200 years. Historians have realised that these adverts are incredibly useful sources for social history. They provide information that is rarely found in any other form and are quantifiable so that changing social trends can be mapped.
