University clearing explained

If your A-level results don’t go to plan, don’t panic. The university clearing process means you could switch, upgrade or defer university entrance

When A-level results are released in mid-August, UCAS automatically sends these to the universities you have selected as your ‘firm’ and ‘insurance’ choices. Lots of students will successfully achieve the grades that their universities asked for and manage to secure their place. However for others, A-level results day can be a time of uncertainty.

If neither your firm choice nor your insurance choice confirms your place with them, your UCAS Track will show that you are in clearing (https://track.ucas.com). Your UCAS Track login and password would have been sent to you when you applied. Universities that have unfilled places on courses can make them available through clearing. For students sitting A-levels this summer, this process opens on results day. Students who applied to UCAS having already received their results last summer, and who are currently on a gap year, can access clearing in July if they have not received any offers at all.
