Installation of ceramic poppies at the Tower of London to mark the centenary of the Great War

With the centenary of the First World War occurring between 2014 and 2018, major libraries and museums have been marking the occasion with digital exhibitions and archives. There is now more digital material relating to the Great War than ever before. This article will guide you through some of the most accessible and best designed websites relating to the First World War.

The British Library has digitised a large and comprehensive collection of First World War materials and made them available online. Many of the visual sources (posters, maps, photographs and paintings) are very important avenues for interpreting and understanding the war. There are battle plans for the Somme (1916), photographs of what life in the trenches was actually like, as well as propaganda posters. Of course there are also books, pamphlets, and some manuscripts which provide a personal viewpoint from men on the front line.
