Tips for university interviewees

Effective preparation can give you the edge at a university interview. Follow our tips and take this opportunity to show yourself at your best

Many universities no longer interview applicants, but certain universities interview anyone they are considering making an offer, while others use the interview either to differentiate between a lot of similarly qualified applicants, or for those applying from a non-traditional route. This article is a guide to how you should approach an interview to study history at university.

First of all, it is fine — indeed normal — to be nervous. Just don’t get so nervous that you can’t talk, or that you forget everything you ever knew about the subject. Interviewers will appreciate that this is probably the first time you have been interviewed for anything, and will normally try to help you relax. You should ‘dress the part’ by wearing suitable interview clothing, since first impressions can matter.
