Interpretation A This large bronze statue of Sir Francis Drake on Plymouth Hoe shows him with a globe under his right hand and with his left hand on his sword. Drake was famously playing bowls on the Hoe near here when he sighted the Spanish Armada sailing to invade. This Victorian memorial statue dates from 1884 and the sculptor was J. E. Boem
