Born in a small town in Louisiana, Norma Nelson had a troubled childhood in a dysfunctional family. Her mother was an alcoholic and her father walked out when Norma was 13. By then she had already got into trouble with the police when she tried to rob a petrol station.
In 1963, aged 16, she married Woody McCorvey. Norma had her first child, Melissa, 2 years later. By then she had left McCorvey and moved back in with her mother. Melissa and a second daughter, Jennifer, were given up for adoption.
