The Bolshevik takeover of Russia in November 1917 is one of the most important events of the twentieth century. This was the first Communist revolution in history and Lenin and his fellow leaders saw themselves as a ‘revolutionary vanguard’ who would change the way human societies were organised forever.
Those outside Russia at the time, and in subsequent years, have struggled to find out what really happened in the USSR between 1918 and 1924. This was because the USSR both tightly controlled information and also presented the world with a carefully crafted propaganda image. We will look at some sources from the period and decide how we might find out about what really happened and what lessons we could take from this when looking at other similar regimes.
