When Mao Zedong was born in Hunan province in 1893 China was a weak state that was being exploited by various imperial powers. Defeat in the Opium Wars had meant that the Qing emperors had been forced to pay indemnities, grant concessions and open treaty ports to Britain, France and the USA.
