Slavery was the main cause of the American Civil War. This was acknowledged by Alexander Stephens (vice-president of the Confederate States) soon after the secession when he stated on 21 March 1860 that the Confederacy’s ‘foundations are laid, its cornerstone rests, upon the great truth that the negro is not equal to the white man; that slavery, subordination to the superior race, is his natural and normal condition’.
