The dramatic growth in life expectancy, the global population and living standards in the past century have been in large part due to improvements in medical knowledge and technology. Each step forward in the understanding of the workings of the body has been based on new scientific approaches. Understanding how the body grows, how the mind works, developing new social systems to provide medicine and treatment to all and finding new ways of repairing and healing the body have brought about dramatic changes in the way medicine operates. This article examines the most significant medical developments of the twentieth century.
