Underpinning the unashamedly modernist culture of the Weimar period was the goal of an equal society which the liberal politicians sought to create. Freedom of speech, freedom of religion and the recognition of equal rights for women and men were all enshrined in the constitution of 1918. Progress towards social democracy and egalitarianism was at the heart of the Weimar Constitution. The area of Weimar culture which most encapsulates the progressive aspects of Weimar was Bauhaus.
