US involvement in both wars was largely a result of the domino theory. This stated that if one Asian state fell to communism then the rest would follow. However, there are marked differences in the way the USA fought each campaign.
The USA had liberated South Korea from the Japanese and maintained an interest in the area. When hostility between Kim Il Sung and Syngman Rhee boiled over into open warfare in 1950 it was therefore understandable that the USA was quick to become engaged in supporting South Korea.
