In the 1950s rock-and-roll by artists like Elvis Presley gave teenagers music of their own to listen to.

There were a number of influences in the 1960s — the ‘British invasion’ by bands like The Beatles, protest songs by artists like Bob Dylan and rock music from bands such as The Grateful Dead and The Doors.
