The ability to understand that there can be different viewpoints on historical events is a crucial skill to develop. Once you begin to understand that there is not always a ‘right’ answer to the question, but that there can be different interpretations of why something happened or what its consequences are then you can discover one of the more interesting aspects of historical study.
In this article we will be looking at the Cold War in the 1960s and 1970s and deciding whether it was a period of détente or increasing tension between the USA and the USSR and other Communist powers. Historians have argued both points of view.
