In the election campaigns of the early 1930s, Hitler promised to make Germany great again after the humiliation of Versailles. He had laid out his aims to achieve this in his book Mein Kampf in 1924:

Reverse the Treaty of Versailles: to restore German territory and build up German armed forces.
