New Deal

Source A 1935 cartoon by Herbert Johnson, a harsh critic of Roosevelt and staunch conservative. The cartoon shows evil interests including the Communists, labor barons (trade unions), ‘utopian dreamers’ (intellectuals fantasising about an unobtainable system) and politicians hiding behind the benign mask of President Roosevelt’s New Deal

Questions based on two different interpretations of an event require you to demonstrate the ability to contextualise sources using your own knowledge as well as evaluate sources by interrogating their provenance and content. Most students are able to comment meaningfully about the provenance of sources and many can compare sources by combining provenance with their own knowledge, but few are able to reach a sustained judgement on which of two interpretations is more convincing. Higher-level thinking is necessary to answer these questions to the highest standard and you can only access the highest levels if you are aware of historical debates.

Roosevelt’s New Deal was as controversial in its time as the current debate in the USA regarding gun control. This is not something which students always appreciate because of Britain’s very different history.
