President Obama’s visit to Cuba in late March 2016 signalled important changes in the relationship between Cuba and the USA. For 55 years the USA has imposed a trade embargo on Cuba, a small island with a population of just over 11 million people, 90 miles from Florida. The trade embargo began in October 1960, nearly 2 years after the revolution led by Castro, and is the longest ever of its kind.
Fidel Castro came to power in 1959 following a revolution against the military dictator, Fulgencio Batista. Although the USA had provided General Batista with economic and military support it was initially prepared to recognise Castro’s government as legitimate, partly as an acknowledgement of Batista’s corruption and unpopularity.
