On 1 May 2003 George Bush addressed US troops from the deck of the USS Abraham Lincoln just 6 weeks after the invasion of Iraq had commenced on 20 March. Speaking in front of a large banner bearing the words ‘Mission Accomplished’ Bush declared:
For a short time it did indeed appear that the multinational force led by the Americans had comprehensively defeated, with comparative ease, an oil rich state with a modern, experienced and wellequipped army.
