On 24 January 1965 Sir Winston Churchill, aged 90, died. He had suffered a stroke 15 days before and had never awakened. He was given a state funeral on 30 January. This is an honour usually reserved for a monarch but it is also occasionally granted to a particularly distinguished figure with Parliament’s approval. Churchill’s role in Britain’s victory in the Second World War ensured Parliament gave its approval. After the funeral ceremony at St Paul’s in London the coffin was transported to Oxfordshire. Churchill was buried in St Martin’s Church, Bladon.
