The First World War

David McGill focuses on the range of material that is available on the internet to commemorate the centenary of the outbreak of the First World War

This year marks the centenary of the outbreak of the First World War. Unsurprisingly there has been a large amount of interest in marking the event and many new resources have appeared online. There are a number of different types of sites that have been set up. This article will look at them and hopefully guide you towards the more useful ones for your studies.

The anniversary of the start of the war was marked in many countries with different events. Guides to these are available online. Sites such as www.1914. org have collected lots of resources relating to the anniversary. The BBC too has planned a range of programmes related to the conflict and an explanation of these can be found at www.tinyurl.com/phcfws3. The British government has also planned a series of events. Information on these can be found at www.tinyurl.com/nyvr87v.
