The US Constitution divides the government into three branches — the executive, the legislature and the judiciary. The Founding Fathers who wrote the US Constitution back in the 1780s set up a delicate system of checks and balances to ensure that none of these three branches could exert too much power. Although the executive (the presidency) and the legislative branches (Congress, the US parliament) are most familiar to us, the judicial branch has also played a major role in US history, and continues to do so in US politics today.
