It is, unfortunately, all too easy to look on the League of Nations with hindsight as a failure. The proof often cited is that it failed to prevent the outbreak of the Second World War. Many of the league’s staunchest critics argue that it was long dead by 2 September 1939. As early as 1920, Punch magazine mocked the League of Nations as a toothless arbiter of international diplomacy, unable to successfully resolve international disputes.
