One of the darkest years in British history was 1940. The army was evacuated from Dunkirk and the RAF tussled with the Luftwaffe in the Battle of Britain, trying to fend off an impending Nazi invasion. Winston Churchill became prime minister in a last desperate throw of the dice against Hitler, but the odds were stacked against him.
