On the morning of Friday 6 March 1953, Moscow radio solemnly announced that Stalin had died the previous evening. He had suffered a stroke on the night of the 1–2 March and he had taken 4 days to die. Joseph Stalin had effectively ruled over the USSR since 1929 and had overseen tremendous and traumatic events. These included the collectivisation of agriculture, the acceleration of industrial development, massive purges of the party as well as war with Germany and the global expansion of Soviet power. What effect would his death have?
