Source A Martha Gellhorn talks to Indian soldiers of the British Army in Italy, 1944

1 Read Sources B and E. What do these sources tell us about the dangers of life as a war correspondent and about Martha Gellhorn’s character?

As dawn broke on Thursday 22 April 1937, the sleep of the guests at the Hotel Florida in Madrid was abruptly interrupted as a series of violent explosions rocked the building. Nationalist forces had begun an artillery bombardment of the city and the terrified guests ran from their rooms to take shelter in the cellar. Among the foreign journalists staying in the hotel covering the Spanish Civil War was a 29-year-old US woman named Martha Gellhorn. The perils of suffering an artillery bombardment were all part of the rigours of her life as a war correspondent.
