The Treaty of Versailles

Source A German delegates (with their backs to the artist) sign the treaty under the eyes of the seated Wilson, Clemenceau and Lloyd George

General expectations regarding the Treaty of Versailles were high. The nations who had been involved in the Great War were determined that nothing like it could be allowed to happen again at any cost. The peacemakers at Versailles were meant to come to an agreement that would provide peace and security in Europe for the foreseeable future.

They are generally held to have failed abysmally and the treaty is often cited as a long-term cause of the Second World War. However, you should be wary of dismissing the efforts of the peacemakers altogether. Each of the Big Three had differing aims and motivations, with the result that the Treaty of Versailles was probably the only possible deal in the circumstances.
