In November Americans will flock to the polls to cast their vote in the 2012 presidential election. Barack Obama, the Democrat who currently resides in the White House, will face Mitt Romney, his Republican rival, with one issue at the forefront of everyone’s minds: the economy. Fittingly, 80 years previously the country faced a similar dilemma as the USA emerged, staggering and dazed, from the Wall Street Crash of 1929. On that occasion the incumbent, Republican Herbert Hoover, faced a stiff challenge from the Democrat Franklin D. Roosevelt. But more than the state of the economy was at stake: this election centred on the role of the government.
