In 1954 France withdrew from its former colony of Indo-China after fighting an intense counterinsurgency campaign against Vietminh guerrilla forces. These forces were led by Ho Chi Minh who accepted a peace deal at Geneva with the French. He agreed that Indo-China would be divided into North and South Vietnam and that he would became leader of North Vietnam.
