Georges Clemenceau

1841–1929

Source A Georges Clemenceau as a young man

1 Read Source B. Poincaré mentions three of Clemenceau’s characteristics: pride and jealousy; resentment and hate; patriotism. Read the article again and give examples of Clemenceau’s actions which illustrate each of these three facets of his character.

On 24 November 1929, Georges Clemenceau died. Eight months earlier, he had specified that he wanted no state funeral, no procession, no elaborate memorial, just a simple burial near his father in the Vendée region where he had been born 88 years before. But the people of France knew that they had lost one of their greatest statesmen, known as ‘Père-la-Victoire’ (The Father of Victory) because he had been prime minister at the end of the First World War, and ‘Le Tigre’ (The Tiger) because of the fierceness of his attacks on political opponents.
