Northern Ireland in the 1960s and 1970s

Between 1969 and 1979 some 2,100 British citizens were killed as a direct result of the Troubles in Northern Ireland. The roots of the conflict go back over 500 years, but what led to the increase in hostilities during this period?

In 1963 Captain Terence O’Neill was appointed as the new leader of the Ulster Unionist Party (UUP) and Northern Ireland prime minister. He reached out to the Catholic community on both sides of the border by doing things like meeting the Taoiseach, the head of the government of the Republic of Ireland.
